If You Like Cupcakes

This Dude here is one of my favorite people to read about. I just love the way he grew his brand and the following he has. It's always cool to have the opportunity to see people that have done it. It give you hope that you to one day can have the same thing. So now you can read about him to. I know it is long but hey it is a a good read...............

Customers like and appreciate the story behind my brand. I started this as a joke, from the trunk of my beat up 89' Toyota Camry; a college drop out — drug and alcohol-free lifestyle — turned down a lot of investors — Took countless risks — kept my shirts out of heaps of chain stores. Yeah, I could of made a TON of money real quick, but I chose quality over quantity.

I'd rather have a strong brand filled with knowledgeable customers who truly enjoy and appreciate what I've created instead of making a quick buck trying to get my shirts in chain stores across the world — being just another fad. People like what nobody else has, and I love coming out with limited edition, exclusive shirts - rather than mass producing things. I communicate with my customers(I wouldn't be here without them!) I build memorable experiences for my customers... whether it be an in-store event, or the packaging and details I put into everything. Most companies try to cut as many corners as they can, to turn a better profit. I do the exact opposite and pay close attention to all the little things. I've managed to build a multi-million dollar, strong, fun, different, homegrown business - without going your typical route. I've managed to employ both of my parents, my sister, and all of my close friends - so that they don't have to work jobs they don't enjoy.

With the huge, international, cult following that has developed from my non traditional way of going about business, you'll see hundreds of dedicated people in line at my releases. Even heaps of people with Johnny Cupcakes' tattoos. Most of my customers are repeat customers. Every type of person collects, understands, and appreciates my brand: Fashionable people, college kids, artsy kids, thugs, indie rockers, skaters, young adults, sneaker heads, and more.

This all didn't happen over night, I didn't get lucky with some random idea, I got off my bum and did something with myself.

My name is Johnny and I make clothes with cupcakes on em. Have you had your cupcake today?

Growing up as a kid, I'd always notice my mom being stressed/bummed out about her 9-5 job. Ever since, I've been coming up with little ways to work for myself. Lemonade stands to yard sales, magic tricks at kids birthday parties to selling tricks/pranks in high school.

I used to be a class clown. I'd buy & collect so many pranks from this one joke shop - that the owner gave me a catalog of where I can purchase these from, wholesale. I'd buy whoopie cushions, trick candy, and itching powder in bulk, to make little 'prank packs'.

I'd then sell these prank packs to the kids at my high school. One day I sold itching powder to this kid Dan, who put it all down his friends back. Turned out his friend was highly allergic to what's inside itching powder. His back swelled up with hives and he was rushed to the emergency room. I almost got kicked out of high school.

After returning back from my suspension, I decided to sell something else... (get your mind out of the gutter!) .. candy is what my new hobby was.

I'd take trips to Costco's, BJ's, and Walmart to buy candy in bulk. After being the candy man for a little while, my high school almost got me in trouble again, for selling far more candy than the school store did (the school stores profits went into school functions, etc.)

The Cover Never Looked So Good

When Hard Work Pays Off

Lonnie Rashid Lynn Jr.—better known as the rapper Common—may still have a residence in Brooklyn, but he’s totally gone Hollywood. This week, the 36-year-old Kanye West crony follows up his supporting role in American Gangster with a turn as a wise assassin alongside Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman in Wanted, loosely based on the Matrixy comic-book miniseries. Even more impressive: His new album, Invincible Summer, arrives in July; he’ll costar with Christian Bale in 2009’s Terminator 4; and he has been cast as Green Lantern in a live-action adaptation of DC Comics’ Justice League of America. We spoke to Common as he was cruising around Los Angeles, dishing out driving directions.

Brush 2 Canvas Leaders

Chicago's Leaders 1354 are releasing the latest pieces in a string of solid special editions on June 14th. So far they've impressed with their New Eras, and now they move to tees. For the artist series they've worked with four local (read Chicago) artists and printed their designs on two colors per artist. So, by match, that's 4 new styles and 8 color choices. The material ranges from the classic hot girl with covered breasts to a great play on the winners medal. The latter should be a good look come Olympics time. Take a look at the Leaders site in the coming days for bios and info about each represented artist.

Something About this I like

This week saw the official release of N.E.R.D.'s "Seeing Sounds" Album. To celebrate we're offering three copies of the disk for give away. Interesting fact, the album title was inspired by watching a discovery channel show about the combining of two senses. The songs themselves stay true to the groups experimental nature, taking cues from a range of influences. All in all, there is an attempt to build a "BIG" sound, which seems the new rage for hip-hop artists. Perhaps they are all looking for that lucrative stadium show money?

We all need To B Fresh

Pharrell Williams, frontman of N.E.R.D, founder of Star Trak , one half of the Neptunes, skateboarder (well, that is somewhat disputed), co-founder of BBC and Ice Cream, and now general tastemaker, has so much on his plate…including a giant purple Hermès Haut à Courroies bag?

BAPE superstar Nigo will soon be in a bookstore near you. The man that transformed Tokyo- based label A Bathing Ape into an international urban phenomenon will now have his whole career consolidated into a large-format monograph. The coffee table book will be released in November by Rizzoli for $60 and will come in five different color dust jackets (we can only hope they’re neon).

This Style Never Getz Old

While it often seems impossible to make money in the fashion business, Forbes magazine has shown us otherwise. their recent issue profiled several fashion billionaires, including Bernard Arnault (25B), Francois Pinault ($17B), And Ralph Lauren, pictured here, (a mere $4B). "While you know the brands, the designers and the supermodels, chances are, you've never heard of the people actually running the show. Despite bankrolling the tastes of millions--and making billions doing so--their names remain largely unknown," the article says, Watch the Video: The Stylish Billionaire. ( Forbes/ JC Report)

Streetwear 101

Green" fashion has been getting lots of press lately, but what about "ethical" fashion? We all talk about how fun it is to find great style at a price, but we rarely consider what it takes to make the disposable fashion we all buy. The BBC sent 6 fashionistas to India to experience working in the rag trade. These poor kids have to pick cotton, work and sleep in a factory, and witness all the aspects of making High Street fashion. Their experiences are shocking. Watch the series, called Blood, Sweat & T-Shirts here. It's quite eye opening.

Style Is Everything

Online fashion retailer has just launched "The Tailor," their new mens online shop dedicated to filling the needs of a more "sophisticated" gentleman. "“The Tailor is designed to be a resource for the man who has a keen sense of style and takes pride in his appearance, but doesn’t take himself too seriously,” said Bluefly CEO Melissa Payner. “Visitors to the site will find The Tailor to be authoritative, not pretentious. They’ll walk away feeling like an insider on how to shop for a sharp tailored look without setting foot into a store.” Visitors should expect the usual fine array of mens suits, shoes, ties, and accessories. Get Your Fresh To Def On

Sometime it's not about how many pairs of shoes you have in your closet, but what type of shoes you have................These velvet slippers may look like the ultimate in WASP style, but trust us—once you get your preppy/trad look on, you’re gonna want a pair of these … These are made by Bowhill & Elliott, a british company which was established at 65 London Street, Norwich over 125 years ago. The founder of Bowhill & Elliott, Obadiah Bowhill, purchased the business from Wright & Co. in 1874. The business passed onto his son and son-in-law, Thomas Baines Elliott, at the end of the nineteenth century. Thus the partnership of Bowhill & Elliott was formed. And the family connection continues into this new century under the direction of Roger Jury, descendant of Mr. Elliott. The company has a shop from which it retails a large selection of ladies and men’s shoes including the following brands, Crockett & Jones, Grenson, Church, Cheaney, Barkers, Loake, Dexter, Mephisto, Carcavelos, HB Shoes, Gabor, Peter Kaiser, Lorbac and Rockport. At the same location there is a small factory where Bowhill and Elliott manufactures slippers and houseshoes and specializes in producing hand embroidered velvet houseshoes and making up tapestry, needlepoint or fabric into houseshoes. This is the ultimate in old world luxury. What do you think about them? Leave a comment!

Not My Sneakers

Nothing like the common sneaker brand, Creative Recreation looks towards runways and high fashion around the world for inspiration. Launched in Orange County, California in 2002, Creative Recreation sought to fill a void within the footwear market.

To co-founders, Robert Nand and Rich Cofinco, there was a clear gap between unsightly athletic sneakers and stuffy dress shoes, thinking that it had been a virtually untouched market. The gap was so grand that they didn’t even feel the need to define a particular demographic. “We … (more…)

Stay In between The lines

April 11th marked an impressive debut for the brand new Joshua Liner Gallery in New York City. While the private party drew a host of recognizable artists, including Futura, Kaws, Stash, Mark Dean Veca, and Ron English, a pinstripe laden Mr. Liner stood out as the true star of the evening. The aptly titled inaugural exhibit, Locked and Loaded, proves that Liner, (former co-owner of Philadelphia’s Lineage Gallery) has his sights set and aims to be a contender in the the NYC art scene. Indeed the show drew upon an array of heavy ammunition with English, Veca, Futura, Stash, Aiko Nakagawa, Tomokazu Matsuyama, Josh Keyes, Greg Simkins, Damon Soule, Oliver Vernon, and Kris Kuksi all taking part - many displaying large-scale works. With several of the 27 participating artists scheduled for solo shows in the coming months, Liner’s target doesn’t seem to far off. See the full exhibition at the gallery web site, (Guillotine)

We Know Jeans

Levi Strauss & Co. may have built its brands with bottoms—the company is synonymous with 501 jeans and Dockers khakis—but CEO and president John Anderson is aiming to leverage that heritage into complete lifestyle collections that garner a much larger percentage of sales from tops, accessories, footwear, outerwear and other categories. The strategy is aimed at jump-starting the company’s $4.27 billion in sales—which have been basically flat since 2003—and diversifying the company beyond its iconic bottoms businesses, which currently account for about 87 percent of total sales. “I think the mix should be 50/50,” said Anderson in an interview last week in Levi Strauss’s New York showroom. “The real opportunity for us is in tops and other categories—we need to drive those businesses even harder. In our own stores we’ve already hit that ratio. We need the opportunity to put those tops in front of more consumers.” Read the full story here. (DNR)

Cut&Sew 101

While to many fashiony guys these days, custom tailoring is something you do to a pair of overpriced denim, there is a certain element of guy who still opts for a custom made suit, or shirt. The personalized attention and impeccable fit you get is like nothing else. And while London's Savile Row and more recently, NYC's NoLIta features bespoke tailoring, real traditionalists opt to go to Rocco Cicciarelli Custom Tailoring, a men's suit factory in Queens. A Continuous Lean's Michael Williams visited and took tons of great photos. Read all about it here.

Put One Foot In Front Of The Other

Flight Club Greene Street, the original location of rare vintage and collectible sneaker shop, Flight Club, has reopened. The store, which originally opened 3 years ago created a new model for the global sneaker collector scene by providing a store and online platform for sneaker heads worldwide to buy and sell rare and hard to find new and used sneakers from a wide range of brands. Sneakers are accepted on consignment at the 4 locations. Once sold, the seller receives 80% of the sale price. Now Flight Club has four brick and mortar stores (2 in NY, 1 in LA and one in Japan) to compliment its world-famous online shop.

Saville Row is For Me

Fokke de Jong takes a pristine cashmere jacket from a rail in his new store, Suitsupply, in Mayfair, and in one dramatic gesture, rips out the lining. “You won’t find this kind of workmanship for this price anywhere else in the UK,” he says, motioning to the fi nely stitched inner construction of cotton, wool and camel hair. “It’s made using an old-fashioned Italian technique that gives a more comfortable fit.” The 34-year-old Dutchman is on a mission to give the cheap suit a good name with his Europe-wide Suitsupply chain. The formula is simple: high-end suits with a starting price of less than £200 for ready-to-wear and a mere £300 for bespoke tailoring – something that may have agitated a few folks on nearby Savile Row. “They probably frown on us a bit, but I don’t really care what they think about it,” says de Jong. Business has been so brisk in the three months since the London branch launched that he confi dently predicts another six to eight UK stores will open within 12 months, eventually growing to a chain of 30. Read the full story here. (Sunday Times)

Savior Style

The rise of bespoke products is a clear movement which has risen to the increasing perception that some luxury brands are increasingly interested in marketing rather than quality . American tailors - notably Thom Browne, and Tom Ford - have built powerful new brands on the power of bespoke. And now other categories are getting in on the action. Bespoke perfumes have been on the rise for several years, and continue to grow in strength: Bespoke perfume (and cologne, for men) is one of the ridiculous luxuries of a certain self-absorbed demographic, with the likes of Chanel and Cartier charging as much as €60,000 for the privilege of having a nose find your perfect scent. — (Via GridSkipper) While Sir Hand Sloane offers bespoke chocolates: The $2,400 tailor-made package includes tasting consultations, a handmade rosewood-and-maple inlaid box containing 60 customized chocolates, and a backup box of another 60. — (Via Time)...

Filler Up

RollS-Royce CEO Ian Robertson revealed at the show that 200 Phantom Coupes have already been spoken for, representing the entire planned production run for 2008. This sportier version is seeking more attention for its form over the other RRs. However Roll-Royce CEO states that it shouldn’t be considered a sports car. The Phantom Coupe’s sister car, the Drophead convertible, has also seen similar success. The Drophead’s sales have far exceeded Rolls-Royce’s plans and is sold out through the summer of 2009.

What in your Jeans

Denim’s role as a fashion darling is somewhat bittersweet. On one hand, jeans have been accepted into the world as an integral part of women and men’s daily wardrobe and no longer viewed as the working man’s uniform. Great. The other side to this is a hefty price tag that shows no signs of relenting. Especially because jean buyers are now bewitched with the way the right jean can look and make you feel.Jessica Horton, owner of Dara Denim, is in the business of peddling premium denim.Horton, a petite red head who happens to be wearing a pair of form fitted J Brand Jeans in a bell-bottom cut opened her first store on K Street in midtown Sacramento. Her new store in Granite Bay’s upscale Quarry Ponds is twice the size of the midtown location and it has an impressive denim wall stacked with all the name-dropping jean brands you can think of: True Religion, Rock and Republic and the latest DVB, Denim by Victoria Beckham.“Jeans have changed,” says Horton. “They have become more acceptable to wear anywhere and even guys are really getting into them. It’s funny to have guys come in here and they are checking out their butts.”Horton and her staff help guide people toward the right jean for them, which isn’t always the name brand jean they read about in a magazine or saw on someone else.“People need to get measured, because not everyone can wear the same jean,” explains Horton. “It’s about proper fit. And it’s good to have someone else look at you, because it’s really hard to see yourself.”Horton names the boutique’s top five best-selling jeans, check them out:
Red Engine: The No. 1 “Go-To” jean at Dara Denim is the Los Angeles made Red Engine Jean company that creates vintage-inspired denim. “These are all-around a good jean. You can be a size 2 or a size 14 and it will look great,” says Horton. Price: $160-$180
DVB: Denim by Victoria Beckham: England’s gift to American pop culture has created a denim line that is finding a surge of popularity in the Sacramento area. Whether it’s her signature boot cut, a form fitting skinny jean or a washed straight leg, all of jeans come with her signature emblem. “It’s a sexy fit and super fun with the stars on the pocket’s,” Horton says. Price: $250 and up
Miss Me: In a world of $200 jeans, Miss Me is the “affordable” jean coming in with an $80 price tag. The Miss Me jean is a hot seller amongst juniors whose parents aren’t interested in dropping $200 for their teenagers who wear clothes out quicker, says Horton.
William Rast: Justin Timberlake is a dancer, singer, performer, former Mouseketeer and Britney Spears beau. But he is also a denim designer along with partner and friend Trace Ayala in the creation of William Rast. The sleek and form fitting jean can be seen on celebutante’s on the red carpet, but also on Sacramento locals who are catching the buzz. “The fit on these are awesome,” says Horton, who can’t stock these jeans fast enough. “People buy them and love them.” Price: $242 and up.
J Brand: Another Los Angeles based denim brand that started as an exclusive line at Ron Herman’s Melrose jeans bar in the spring of 2005. Known for its skinny jean, but in the last year have introduced a fun wide-leg style popular at Dara Denim. $174 and up

We hate the Fakers

While we love RMC Red Monkeys for their limited edition denim designs and collaborations, we never thought they'd be joining the ranks of Seven New York and True Religion in the fight against copycats. Unfortunately, there has been such an influx of fake Red Monkeys (think plastic patches and bleached cotton) that the designer, Martin Ksohoh, has shared a checklist to ensure that collectors of the brand receive a one-of-a-kind piece to add to their denim collection and not a cheap knockoff.
If you have ant queries or questions contact the owners or or

It is All about the Clothes

And since we’re talking about the projects, children, the tears flow without ending! The 4th season of Project Runway has now, sadly, come to a close. The winner is none other than the tremendously talented 21- year old Christian Siriano from Annapolis, Maryland. Everything he designed this season was just devastatingly innovative children although at times his attitude was just devastating. I’m glad he won so I wish him all the best. And just because I’m gracious darlings, I will also wish Edward Scissorhands all the best for styling Christian’s hair this season.

J. Crew has found the location for its first men’s-only store. It will be located at The Liquor Store, a landmark building at 235 West Broadway at White Street in Tribeca. It will be smaller and more intimate than the company’s other stores, according to a spokesperson, and is slated to open in the early summer. It will carry “the best-of-the-best” of the J. Crew men’s collection, including Collector’s Items, its upscale, limited-edition items. It will also offer the company’s “list” of the items that every man should own. Millard Drexler, CEO of J. Crew, mentioned the planned debut of the men’s-only store during the company’s fourth quarter and year-end conference call on Tuesday. (DNR) Incidentally, if you haven't visited for a while, now's a good time. there's a great section of evergreen styles, a monogram shop, and a vintage section.

Creative Recreation has definitely been leading the market with its interpretations on classic footwear silhouettes and unusual colorways and fabrics. Smell that Leather

NEW YORK — It was 1983, at Los Angeles’s incarnation of the MAGIC show, when Joe Nadav first laid eyes on Pelle Pelle. “This guy was selling turquoise and lime green leather jackets,” recalls the owner of Philadelphia’s preeminent streetwear specialty chain City Blue. “I never saw those colors in a leather jacket before!” At $275 a pop wholesale, Nadav was taking an expensive chance on an unknown label. But just two days after his first five leathers arrived at the store—before Nadav had even paid the bill for the jackets—“they sold out,” he says. “The market had never seen anything like it!” Fast forward to 2008: Pelle Pelle last month celebrated its 30th anniversary—an incredible feat in a young men’s urban market that rarely tolerates brands for more than a handful of seasons. “You can’t fool our customer,” says Pelle Pelle founder Marc Buchanan. “You either get their approval or you don’t. It’s an honor to have gotten that approval from our customer for 30 years.” It certainly is an anomaly to survive the often-tumultuous young men’s market—even for many of the brands, like Pelle Pelle, that helped found the industry decades ago. Labels such as Cross Colours, Karl Kani and Fubu made their mark, then disappeared, at least from the mainstream eye. But Pelle Pelle’s bread and butter—Marc Buchanan’s luxurious leathers—have earned the brand a niche audience, and one that won’t buy leather from anyone else. Buchanan was already a seasoned leather veteran when he founded Pelle Pelle; in 1971, he created the leatherwear firm Gandolf & Co., and sold it five years later. After toiling as a consultant for several years, Buchanan recognized a gap in the market for what he describes as “high fashion” in the leather business, “at an affordable price.”
